Visit Amsterdam In April

Amsterdam in April

Amsterdam is such a beautiful and interesting city to visit. With many historical sites to learn about mixed in with a more modern fun night life and different activities to keep you entertained. From exploring the canals and museums to trying out the different restaurants and bars, there’s something for everyone. Realistically I don’t think there is a bad time of year to visit Amsterdam as there is such a wide range of things to do. But, having visited recently in April here is why I think spring is a good time to go.

Flowers

The best thing about visiting The Netherlands in April is that it is flower season. It is a great time to enjoy all of their flower fields. Keukenhof is a popular flower garden near Amsterdam which is open from the end of March to the Beginning of May and advertise that the middle of April is the best time to enjoy their flower displays. Holland is known for its many tulip fields that bloom in spring and they are so beautiful to see.

Weather

Unfortunately the weather can be quite unpredictable in April, and that’s coming from someone who lives in England! The few days I visited the weather seemed to change from rainy to sunny every hour. The temperature averages around 9°c at this time of year. If you have some sunny days this time of year is lovely. However, if it is rainy there are plenty of inside activities to enjoy.

Things to do

Enjoying all the flowers that are blooming is defiantly the best thing to do when visiting at this time of year. Other than that, I also really enjoyed exploring all the streets and canals in Amsterdam. It is a very walkable city that you can explore for hours. There are many parks to wander through such as Vondelpark and Westerpark and I’d also recommend checking out Lomanstraat. As well as this the city is filled with museums and experience. Some of the most popular are: Anne Frank House Museum, Van Gogh Museum, Heineken experience and Moco museum.

Must Pack

and finally a little checklist of my most used items on my trip:

  • a Contactless card – There are lots of different transport cards you can purchase or use a contactless debit or credit card to tap on and off of most of their public transport.
  • Rain coat and/or umbrella
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Phone or Camera for taking pictures
  • Cross body or Bum bag – for safe keeping and easy access to your items.
