Is Boa Vista, Cape Verde The Destination For Me?

Boa Vista, one of 10 islands that make up Cape Verde is known for it’s sandy beaches and sunny weather. The two main tourist islands of Cape Verde, Boa Vista and Sal, have been popular destinations for many years. However they seem to be growing even more interest recently. So is Boa Vista the destination for you?

Weather

September is the hottest time of the year in Cape Verde, with temperatures around 30°c during the day. In the winter months you can expect highs of 25°c. However, due to the desert like landscape, the heat does not hold during the night so expect slightly chilly evenings.

With the islands being very flat they are also subject to very windy conditions. I personally didn’t find this too much of a problem but you may want to consider taking some covers or bottles for your drinks to keep the sand out!

Beaches

Sandy beaches surround the island but so do rough waves. If you like to lay out on the beach this is an excellent destination for you, but if you were hoping for a dip in the sea this might not be possible. Most of the time it is safe to go in the sea but you do need to be careful and it will likely be a fight against the waves. Of course if you like water sports this can work to your benefit and there are places on the island for these activities.

Activities

If you love an all inclusive pool holiday this is probably a great destination for you! A lot of hotels put on their own activities throughout the day and fun evening shows to entertain their guests. Outside of the hotels though it is a very quiet island. There are a few trips out that can be booked such as quad biking and boat trips. With the growing popularity the island is developing so hopefully more will be available in the future.

Airport

I wanted to add a quick note about the airport as I know this can be important for some people. The airport on Boa Vista is very small so you will normally be in and out quickly! Typically there will only be one plane here at a time so you don’t have to worry about waiting in long lines.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a relaxed sunny getaway this could definitely be a good choice for you. If you like to do more sightseeing and experiences you might want to look for somewhere else. The island of Sal is often seen as the more urbanised and busy island with the town of Santa Monica which could be the place for you.
