3 Free Places To See In Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of the most popular European city breaks, known for it’s interesting streets and canal systems. There are many fun things to do in Amsterdam but with it’s popularity, it can add up to a pricy trip. I recently spent two days in the city exploring and found there was lots to do and see without spending any money. So here are 3 free things you can add to your next visit.

1. Canals, Shops and Bloemenmarkt

Strolling through the streets of Amsterdam along the canals and checking out the shops is of course a great free thing to do in Amsterdam. With so many unique buildings and sights to see you could wander for hours. A popular shopping spot to check out is Bloemenmarkt which has a collection of interesting shops and market stalls selling souvenirs and flower bulbs.

2. Vondelpark

The Beautiful Vondelpark is located about a 30 minute walk from the centre of Amsterdam. This 120-acre park is filled with wildlife and nature to explore. A walk around the outside loop of the park takes about 45 minutes or ride a bike to see the sites quicker. Bring a picnic and spend the afternoon here on a sunny day or try out one of the many cafes. I visited during spring time and there were many flowers and cherry blossom trees in bloom to see as well as baby ducks and birds out on the ponds. There are also many sculptures and statues around the park to check out, even one by Picasso.

3. Lomanstraat

If you decide to take the walk (or a bus) out to Vondelpark you should also check out Lomanstraat. Now simply put this is just a random street in Amsterdam but the road is lined with Honey Locust trees which have arched over the road to make for a unique view. The street was so quiet and felt surreal when I visited so I would definitely take the few minutes to check it out if you’re nearby. No matter the time of year you visit the street will also make for a great Instagram spot but of course be respectful of the other people around and careful of the cars and bikes as it is a public road.
